During a mock commission meeting the students will represent city commissioners, as well as citizens, debating the merits of anti-gun violence legislation.  The project called, TAGS United: “Teens Against Gun Shots” is a civic engagement project created as a memorial to Daniel Torres,  a student who lost his life to gun violence.

Why:

The mock commission meeting is the culmination of a project to teach youth how the U.S. democratic/legislative system works and how to become involved to effect change. The project is funded by the Zambrano Foundation whose mission is to develop, promote and empower innovative social and educational programs where disenfranchised societies can strengthen democracy, economic development and equality. The foundation awarded Hispanic Unity and its
Unity 4Teens youth program a $10K grant for the project.
